The Artistic Famine

A Brief Meditation on the State of Art and Culture

I’ve been having a great deal of trouble finding art, stories, music and media that feel genuinely inspired and perhaps most importantly: fresh. At the very least, I’ve been struggling to find such things with any kind of consistency.

Despite the fact that media consumption is not a major part of my life at this point, this sparsity of good stories and art has still had a significant impact.

There is a growing and oppressive sense of hypoxia.

We see everywhere the erosion of architecture, the dilution of design. Lyrical poetry replaced by hypnotic repetition, the ceaseless and cynical serialization of anything that can be exploited and drawn out for as long as possible. Everything is sequelized, rebooted, remixed, sampled and deracinated.

The dull, booming thunderclaps of the weapons of mass distraction ripple through the frayed psychic fabric of our civilization; the shockwaves blasting chunks of brick and mortar off its bastions.

Is it just me, or does this fit your experience as well? I would be curious to hear. In fact, I feel like I need to know.
